I must say, the game has changed. Ideas and ideologies have always crossed borders – including Trumpism. What is new is the direct physical interference. Paradoxically, Trumpists are using a platform like NATO, which is built on mutual respect for sovereignty and borders. When this happens, it is no surprise that it feels paralyzing since the logical response would be to break norms. A real dilemma!
Trumpism is both a political practice and an underlying ideology. Ideologically, it draws on nationalism, conservative values, and the belief in the right of the strong. In practice, we see chaos strategies, provocations, and a mix of politics and entertainment. This approach has not only affected the U.S. political landscape but is now spreading to Europe as well.
A clear example is Elon Musk’s appearance on January 25, 2025, at a campaign event for the German right-wing party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in Halle. Via video, he urged Germans to be proud of their culture and to “move on” from past guilt. This action was widely criticized as an inappropriate interference in Germany’s internal affairs.
Similarly, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, during the Munich Security Conference on February 14, 2025, sharply criticized European leaders. He accused them of suppressing free speech and ignoring voters’ concerns. Vance’s statements were met with strong opposition from German officials, including Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and EU’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who rejected his comparisons and emphasized the importance of maintaining political distance from far-right parties like AfD.
According to press reports, JD Vance also met with leaders of Germany’s far-right, including AfD leader Alice Weidel, during his visit to Munich. The meeting took place on February 14, 2025, in connection with the security conference.
The Dilemma for Europe
These actions by prominent American figures represent a new form of direct physical interference in European politics. Traditionally, ideas and ideologies have crossed borders, but the current situation, where American actors actively participate in and attempt to influence European elections and political discourses, is unprecedented.
This development creates a complex dilemma for European nations. When the norms of diplomatic behavior are broken by an ally, the question arises of how to respond appropriately without violating the established norms themselves. Responding in kind could further escalate tensions, while passivity might be perceived as acceptance of the interference.
It is up to you to think this through
